Worth has a number of channels in place to support students in their learning and general well-being.
Students meet regularly with their Housemaster or Housemistress and are placed within Tutor groups. Most Tutor groups in Years 7 to 11 are House-based, but those in Years 12 and 13 may contain a mixture of Houses and Years. Tutor groups are small and students are treated as individuals. As well as discussing academic progress, they will discuss other matters of mutual interest or elements of the pastoral curriculum.
Much of the work of the Tutor goes on quietly behind the scenes – a conversation about a student with a colleague, a phone call to parents before a difficulty becomes a problem, or a personal word of congratulation when, for example, one student helps another.
The SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural) sessions are a regular feature of student timetables and cover the following topics:
- Spiritual – Beliefs, perspective on life, respect for different people's feelings and values.
- Moral – Recognising the difference between right and wrong, moral and ethical issues.
- Social – Cooperation, resolving conflicts effectively.
- Cultural – Cultural influences, respect for and celebration of cultural diversity.
Worth aims to equip all students with the skills needed to feel comfortable and to study confidently in the School environment. Our Head of Learning Support, Mrs Catherine Latham, is always on hand at Open Mornings to answer any questions from prospective parents. In order to meet the mild learning needs of those who require specialist support for either the entirety of their academic career or for part of it, the School offers both small group and one-to-one teaching as appropriate. Support is taught by suitably qualified specialist teachers and provision is reviewed on a termly basis. Charges apply for learning support and are available upon request.
