Sport at Worth

The Games Department provides the opportunity for students to take part and excel in a whole range of sports while at Worth. We pride ourselves on being able to cater for the full range of sporting abilities and interests.

Team sports

Students can represent the school in many team sports throughout the year. Boys play the main games of rugby and football and girls play hockey and netball in the Autumn and Lent term respectively. Cricket, athletics, rounders and tennis are the main options in the Summer term. Worth is also keen to encourage participation in other specialist areas with successful teams representing the school in fencing, basketball, cross country running, squash and badminton.

The school endeavours to maintain a competitive programme of sports fixtures and matches are most commonly played on Saturdays with various fixtures taking place at other times in the school week. Regular strong opposition ensure that our students maintain a competitive spirit and build strong local rivalries fuelled by the desire to succeed. Worth regularly enjoy success in County Cup competitions where our teams compete against the very best talent in the district.

Many of our students go on to represent county teams and over the years we have also been fortunate to have students represent their country in their sport. In recent years, Larry Achike has competed for England in the Triple Jump winning a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games and Nick Walshe has been part of the England rugby squad and has won an England 'A' cap.

Sport for all

Students who wish to develop their physical fitness outside of a strictly team based environment may choose to join the multi-sport option where students are able to try a range of different activities and learn to enjoy the benefits that can be derived from physical recreation.

A comprehensive programme of extra-curricular activities is also available with private coaching and clubs on offer to those wishing to participate. Opportunities include tennis and squash coaching, golf, sailing badminton, volleyball, basketball, table tennis and indoor football. Weight training and fitness and exercise classes are also very popular choices in the evenings.

Above all we aim to offer students a competitive, safe environment in which they can follow their sporting passions and improve their physical well being enabling them to excel in all arenas and complimenting their academic studies.
